Another morning and, as Arnold opens his front door and stands on the step, he has never been so pleased to see the dull grey sky. After retrieving both papers from the letterbox, he sits down on his chair and waves at one of the press vans that is still parked outside. He glances at both headlines and smiles the biggest smile he has for a while: Small Town Terrorised by Eight-Foot Dead Husband. David and Goliath—the True Story. A dog barks in the distance somewhere, and his heart skips a beat. “Bloody dogs,” he mutters—but doesn’t mean it.

Patricia looks out her lounge window and is glad to see the grey sky. She eyes the dog poo on the front strip, but it doesn’t bother her as much today. Yesterday seems like just a nightmare, and if it wasn’t for the news reports on the television and the gossip from the street, she could perhaps convince herself it was. The pavements are awash with tourists, clicking their cameras at the broken road from behind the police cordon. Someone took a picture of her house this morning, too, and she didn’t care for that.

Jenny is already on the steps, carefully wiping the sticky redness from her Begonias. She cannot find any words today and instead hums a tune she heard on the radio that morning. She is quite excited about going to the pub come evening, and thinks she might become a regular now there is some talk of a rescue bid from the council.

Arnold watches the news from his hospital bed; the reports mention his bravery. “Life in the old dog yet,” he sniggers and performs a little salute at the television.

Margaret is reading the newspaper at the breakfast table. “I cannot believe we missed this, Gordon,” she says with a sigh.

“I know love. More tea, dear?” he replies.

David sits at his study desk with the fresh writing pad in front of him. His dad is sitting in the lounge talking to two more reporters about how proud he is of his lad. He picks up the pen and writes the title for his new story: Bloody Dogs.
